My day-trip to Mexico City!
Alright, so we all know that I'm not >really< close enough to The Border to go to Mexico City for a day.I hung out with my Mexican friend, her baby daughter, and her father-in-law at The Summit for most of the day. (Later on her husband gave me like 10 or 15 Xbox games... sweeeet!) In addition to me practicng my Spanish and my friend practicing her English, I thought we were going to buy baby AND mommy clothes, but then she was like, "Oh, I have plenty of clothes... my baby is the one that needs clothes!" So, her daughter got a new swimsuit, sun hat, and (I think) a shirt. The best thing about Baby Gap was that we probably looked like a Mexican family. Her father in law (who I called Papá) knows next-to-no English, and she knows about as much English as I know Spanish (which is a very good thing!), so when we went to check out, the girl was like, "Would you like to open up a Gap Credit Card? Insert sales pitch here...?" So they both look at me like, "We're totally going to say know but, what did she just say?" look in their eyes. So I translated and all three of us turned to the salesgirl and said, "No!" Also, buying the baby sun hat was a "ohh-we're-walking-out-the-door-but-this-looks-cute!" buy. Papá decided he would buy it as my friend and I changed her daughters' stinky diaper. We're coming out of the bathroom and the salesgirl is all like, "Would you like for me to cut off the tags?" He just kind of makes a head motion that sort of means yes and sort of means no, so I just blurt out, "Go ahead and cut them off!" as I dash over to the counter. He looks at me and shrugs and says, "I don't know what the world she's saying...!" as the girl is snipping the tags off. He walks away and she's like "Oh, don't forget the reciept!" Oh well. :)
I also took them to the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, which was freaking great. For those of you that haven't been there, they have lots of candies (most made of lots of different types of chocolates but a few not made of chocolate at all), with their specialty being chocolate-or-other-candy covered Granny Smith apples. My friend was asking me what was on the apples and I had no freaking clue how to say "pecans" (LOL) ... luckily there were some pecan cookies right next to me, so there was some gesturing going on. Also, we tried to ask Papá like 500 times if he wanted anything and she (who acted as the intermediate translator because my brain is really slow) said, "He doesn't want sweet chocolate, he wants bitter chocolate." So of course, I'm like, "Oh, so he wants sugar-free chocolate!" And she's like, "No, just not sweet chocolate." So, I ask the salesdude if dark chocolate is bitter, and he says yes, so Papá finally decides on a dark chocolate candy bar. My friend and I both got caramel, white chocolate, and cinnamon apples. They are soooooooo flipping good!!!
Then we went to Old Navy, which was sorta boring. We just did some browsing and no decision making, though we did set off the security alarms twice (once coming in, and once starting to walk out, but we backed up and walked out again and nothing happened, so Papá was like, "Wasn't us! I'm hungry, let's go.").
After telling them I liked Asian food and sushi, we went to a Chinese buffet. It was super hilarious because my friend was like, "Can I get a take-home box for my husband?" I was like, "Not without paying for it...!" So she's like, "That's fine, I'll pay. How much does it cost?" Neither of us had a clue, so we asked the waitress ($8 for non-seafood, $10 for seafood). We got a seafood buffet, and Papá offered to chock it full of food. When he came back, my friend was like, "Umm... for $10 you'd better put more food in there!!!" He was like, "I can't fit anything else in there!" And she was like, "Yea you can...!" So he shoved more food in there, somehow. After that, he went back to the buffet for a round of desserts. He came back with jello, fruit, and sushi. Somehow, he thought that the sushi (which was nigiri sushi, for you afficionados... rice under raw salmon for sushi beginners) was coconut and rice. He was like, "Taste it! It's coconuts mixed with rice." I was like, "Have YOU tasted it? It's salmon and rice. That's sushi!" He looked totally confused, took out his glasses, looked closer, and said, "Oh. So it is!" He's such a goof. :)
Mexicans are totally hilarious. :) Hopefully I can go to Mexico or Spain one day!
