Girls and science and math
A big issue that has been raised lately is the fact that the numbers of women in science- and math-related fields is decreasing rapidly, but there have been many groups trying to motivate women to come to the fields, and trying to get young girls interested in them.My question is this... if there are less women in these fields, where in the hell are they going? Other sectors? House-wifeing? Laziness and welfare...? Hmm. I think the answer varies, and that it's all of these. Apparently in Japan, a lot of women just stay out of the workforce after childbirth, so "house-wifeing" for the Japanese. (That article is about the Japanese government wanting to put more women in leadership positions.) In my opinion, there are a lot of people in the US that are abusing the welfare system, so that would be "laziness and welfare". [Side note: I'm not saying there all people on welfare abuse it... I'm saying that a lot of people see it as a way not to have to work anymore. There are people that use it to get back on their feet.]
My solution is this: telling kids (not just girls) that they can do whatever they want, especially underprivelidged kids. They're the ones that don't think they will amount to anything because they've been kicked their whole life. Not to say that we shouldn't tell EVERY child that they can be whatever they want to be when they grow up.
As far as getting girls interested in science and math, the smart ones are most likely already interested, but everyone knows there's a social stigma on being smart. My solution is to split up the girls and boys once a month for a couple days. Girls won't feel pressured to be "cute" in front of the boys, and their natural intelligence and curiosity will shine through.
Or, some girls won't care who thinks being smart is "dumb". Like me. I could care less who thinks I'm smart or stupid. I could care less in high school, I could care less now. When I'm a successful engineer, who is well-traveled, I'm going to love to rub it in the faces of the people who thought doing well in school was bad.

I, personally, am going to find the people that bullied me in high school, beat the shit out them, and then laugh at them when my very expensive lawyer trounces their very inexpensive lawyer in court. WHEE!
